PyCon Taiwan hosted PyCon APAC in 2014 and again in 2022. That shared history is part of why this talk exists.
This talk covers the transition from PyCon APAC to PythonAsia, the rebranding, the founding of the Python Asia Organization (PAO), and what it takes to build regional support that works for local communities, not over them. PAO handles coordination, infrastructure, and institutional knowledge so each community can focus on what they do best.
Through real experiences organizing across multiple countries, this talk reflects on what works, what does not, and where the region is headed next.
Description
PyCon Taiwan hosted the regional APAC conference twice, in 2014 and 2022. That is not background information. That is proof that this community already shows up for something bigger than itself.
This talk traces the journey from PyCon APAC to PythonAsia and the founding of the Python Asia Organization (PAO), a non-profit registered in Estonia that holds the conference series, manages regional trademarks, and provides continuity across the region.
The name change from PyCon APAC to PythonAsia was intentional. Like the EuroPython Society with EuroPython, it gives Asian communities real ownership over what they have built, independent of any single governing body.
PAO's model is straightforward: local communities lead their own events and PAO supports them with shared infrastructure, repeatable workflows, regional and global sponsorship, and institutional knowledge that does not disappear when an organizing team changes.
The talk draws from real cross-community work across the Philippines, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, and beyond, covering what coordination actually looks like, where it gets hard, and what makes it sustainable.
It closes with what has already been announced: PythonAsia 2027 will be held in Singapore, co-organized with PyCon SG. PyCon Taiwan has been part of this story since 2014. The invitation to stay connected and get involved is open.
Freilla Mae Espinola is Executive Director of the Python Asia Organization (PAO), leading regional Python community initiatives across East and Southeast Asia. She also serves as Director of Operations and a Board of Trustees member at Python Philippines (PythonPH). A seasoned tech professional with over a decade of experience, she is passionate about empowering communities through Python and building inclusive tech ecosystems across Asia.
